Overview

The graduate program in the School of Computer Science and Engineering offers two degrees, Maser of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). Research interests in the school cover a broad range of topics concerned with Software Convergence and Knowledge and Information Systems: embedded systems, language & information processing, information security, artificial intelligence, realtime image processing & telecommunication, network, digital media, virtual reality, computer graphics, mobile network protocol, database, intelligent knowledge engineering, computer vision, software engineering, and new web.

As the result of academic excellence in the fields of computer science and engineering, many awards and financial supports have been received from the Korean government and many companies. In 2005, the school of was selected as a recipient of the 2nd stage of BK21 program and awarded a total of 37 billion won for an eight-year period ending in 2013. As of year 2009, more than 80% of the graduate students of the school were recipients of scholarships or other financial aids.

Additionally, the school offers co-operative educational programs with several well-known research institutes, such as Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM), and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Also, the school provides off-campus classes for working professionals in the Gumi industry complex area, such as LG Electronics Inc., Samsung Electronics Inc., and etc. In such cases, the degree and the courses to be offered are customized along with the time the classes are taught.

Research areas

  • Ubiquitous Sensor Networks: A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a network consisting of distributed self-organized autonomous devices using sensors to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as vibration, motion, temperature, sound etc. The protocols of WSN are needed to support effective data forwarding and processing.


  • Real-time image processing and telecommunication: Research interests are in MPEG-2/4 system, H.264/AVC video coding, Multi-view video system and coding scheme. In addition to, we have been researching real-time network, audio/video bridging, Ethernet passive optical network. Multi-view point videos are obtained in real-time form a lot of camera and real-time processing. Simulations that related on network technology are carried through OPNET simulator. We pursue the convergence of the MPEG and network technology in real-time.


  • Virtual Reality: Research interests are in the modeling of real world, and the information visualization for visual analytics. The modeling includes the 3D geometry, illumination, and 3D motion which are static or dynamic phenomena of the real world. Novel techniques are introduced on 3D computer vision, 3D computer graphics, human computer interaction, and augmented reality. The research results will be applied to mobile augmented reality, rehabilitation training system, computer game, inspection system, intelligent car system, etc.


  • Biocomputing: Research includes computational modelling of information processing of human brain. Based on the understating on information processing mechanism of human brain, we try to implement intelligent information processing systems by using various methodologies in the field of machine learning and statistics. Currently, it is focused on the visual pattern recognition systems which can be applied to various practical systems such as biometrics and machine vision. Our works are closely related to various research fields such as pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and brain science.


  • Computer and Robot Vision: Multi-view 3D reconstruction of real objects is of very interests in computer vision and computer graphics researches. Research interests are in the applications of the multi-view 3D computer vision techniques to various purposes in industrial, commercial, medical, and military areas. We are currently interested in developing 3D computer vision techniques for 3DTV, Mobile Robot, 3D Entertainment, and so on.


  • Database: Research interests span all aspects of database, data mining, and novel query optimization techniques by exploiting parallelism. It is very crucial to modify existing database and data mining algorithms to fully utilize multi-core CPUs. It is also important to develop scalable time-series pattern matching algorithms.


  • Machine learning: Research areas include the development of machine learning models, text mining, information extraction and Bioinformatics. Also, natural language processing, ontology and semantic web are included in this research. Most research papers are published in prestigious top-tier machine learning (ICML, AAAI, NIPS, IJCAI) and conference of the other fields (ISMB, InCoB, ACL, SIGIR).


  • Computer graphics: Research interests are in the development of mobile graphics standard libraries and applications, especially with the Khronos Group. One of the research labs is an official academic member of the Khronos Group and also the official committee member of the ISO/SC24 Korean Chapter and Web3D Korean Chapter, respectively. Research solutions and experiences for the OpenGL ES 1.1, OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG 1.1, OpenGL SC 1.0.1, and EGL 1.4 standards are being developed.


  • Software Engineering: Research interests include web metrics and web application restructuring, which can be used to improve the maintainability of web applications. The metrics, such as complexity and similarity, indicates the degradation degree of target applications. The final goal is to establish restructuring methodology for several types of web applications with the defined metrics.


  • Software Safety Engineering: The purpose is to recognize that control software is the core part of safety-critical systems, and develop methods and processes to ensure high-quality software development. In this respect, we have been working on two specific topics: formal aspects of component-driven system developments and integration of formal and semi-formal automated analysis techniques in the development process.

Scholarships for International Students

KNU Honors Scholarships
- Qualifications: Applicants with recommendations from their academic advisors and Dean of their department. Also applicants should meet certain conditions (refer to the university website for details)
- Benefits: 100% or 50% of tuition fees, health insurance, monthly stipend from academic advisor
- Support period: 2 years for master’s or doctoral program, 4 years for combined master’s & doctoral program

BK21 Scholarships
- Qualifications: Applicants with recommendations from their academic advisors
- Benefits: Monthly stipend ($400~$600/month for master’s, $800~1000/month for doctoral program)
- Support period: 2 years for master’s, 4 years for doctoral program
